School Safety

School Zone Rules

In today's climate, there is a lot of focus on school safety. At Huffaker, it is a top priority. Safety inside the school and outside. But who is responsible for school safety outside the building's walls?  Parents, students, Huffaker staff, and the community passing through active school zones bear the responsibility to collectively implement and follow school zone rules. Understanding these rules minimizes injuries and accidents each year.

Our goal is to help everyone understand these rules and join together to increase safety in active school zones.  Each school has a designated drop off and pick up zone, also known as the "Kiss and Drop" area.  These areas are meant for parents to pull in, "kiss" their child goodbye and exit each child on the passenger side of the car, away from moving vehicles. Huffaker staff is available to assist your child(ren) in exiting the vehicle and entering the school grounds.

The rules below outline what the law defines as school zone rules:

  • School zone speed limit is 15 mph.
  • Huffaker's "Kiss and Drop" zone is on Wheatland.  The speed limit inside this zone is 5 mph.
  • When exiting the "Kiss and Drop," you can only make a right turn. There are several ways once you turn right to exit back to Lakeside.  If you are not sure where to go, please ask the crossing guard.
  • Parking inside the "Kiss and Drop" zone is not allowed.  The left side is for cars exiting only.
  • Gates open at 9:10 a.m. and no students should be left unattended prior to the gates opening, as there will be no supervision.
  • Red zones are not for stopping or parking, they are for emergency vehicles only.
  • The bus zone is off limits to cars dropping off or picking up 30 minutes prior to school starting or ending. Cars are never allowed in the bus lane while buses are present.
  • Do not stop in the road or in front of the bus lane to let your child out.  This causes accidents and children can be hit.  There are designated areas for dropping off or picking up.
  • U-Turns are illegal in an active school zone.
  • If you are running late, please do not speed through the school zone, you are already late, and nothing will change that.  Take your time and ensure that you, your child(ren) and other students or drivers remain safe.
  • At 9:30 a.m. your child is late and if you arrive after that time you must walk your child into school to sign them in.
  • During inclement weather, the same school zone rules apply and students need to be dropped off in the same way you do in dry weather.  They will enter the school the same way - the main entrance will not be used for student drop off during these times.
